SUERTES DEL MARQUÉS

Suertes del Marqués is a family winery that was founded in 2006 on the island of Tenerife. Before they produced and bottled wine, the family cultivated vineyards and sold grapes to other wineries in the area. They have 11 hectares under vine at between 300 and 750 meters above sea level with a wide variety of orientations and soil compositions. In addition to these, there are another 15 hectares under long term agreement that are farmed according to the same principles as the estate holdings. The business is under the direction of Jonatan García Lima, who also makes the wine.

All of the vineyards are located in the north of the island within the D.O. Valle de la Orotava. The estate vineyards mainly consist of own-rooted centenary plantings of Listán Blanco and Listán Negro which are trained in the Cordón Trenzado system. This training system is unique to the Valle de la Orotava D.O. In addition to Listán Blanco and Negro, a number of other local varieties are featured, including Vijariego Negro, Castellana Negra, Baboso Negro, Malvasía Rosada and Torrontés Volcánico. The volcanic soils here are reddish in color and loose, with a slightly acidic pH.

As is the case in the vineyards, work in the cellar is carried out with minimal intervention. The fermentations proceed with indigenous yeasts and sulfur levels are kept to a minimum. A number of different sizes and types of vessels are used, including large oak foudres, smaller oak barrels, concrete tanks, stainless steel and plastic bins.

The wines that Jonatan produces in this unique terroir are at once intellectually challenging and acutely sensual. These are not mere "island wines", they are the finest contemporary examples of a 500-year viticultural tradition that is entering a new golden age.
