BODEGAS MITARTE

Bodegas Mitarte is a family-owned and operated winery in the village of Labastida. The estate comprises 48 hectares of vineyards divided amongst 57 parcels. The majority of these parcels are in Labastida (Rioja Alavesa), with some satellite sites in the villages of Haro and San Vicente de la Sonsierra (Rioja Alta). The vineyards are planted at different altitudes and orientations with vine ages ranging from 10-15 years to 100+ years. Among the red varieties, Tempranillo is the most widely planted, with smaller plantations of Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. White grapes are represented primarily by Viura and Garnacha Blanca, with smatterings of Malvasia, Moscatel and Calagraño scattered amongst the older plots. The vineyard management is overseen by Antonio Gil Orive.

The Gil Orive family's history in Rioja stretches back hundreds of years. A testament to this fact is their 16th-century underground winery, dug out over ten meters deep into the earth. It is one of the only facilities of its age and level of preservation in the region of Rioja. The facility where they produce the wines today was built in 1998. Fermentations take place in concrete, stainless steel and foudre, and wines mature in both French and American barrels of different sizes and ages. The winemaker is Ignacio Gil Orive. Ignacio's reds are classically-styled, dark fruited and savory, with a fine balance of depth and freshness. His whites are wines with a great capacity to surprise, especially the Puro Vicio, a blend of five varieties from a vineyard planted in 1903.
